Abstract

Every reasonable creature determines benefit and harm according to its understanding. This means that one thing is advantageous for me and the other is harmful. The standard which he has set for measuring goodness and harmfulness based on his experience and knowledge but his tendency also plays a great role in it. This is the reason that if the subjective opinion is considered one thing will be beneficial for one person and that everything will be harmful to another. So, when one thinks beyond personal liking and disliking, he is made to practice according to nature. Even if he sees his harm, he is satisfied that it is because of his lack of understanding and there is nothing lacking in the natural principle. The principles of Goodness (Ṭayyib) and Vile (Khabīth) which Islām has enunciated is in fact natural principle. And finally, one’s temperament is agreed with it. Questions regarding Goodness (Ṭayyib) and Vile (Khabīth) hit the mind that what is the meaning of Goodness (Ṭayyib) and Vile (Khabīth)? Similarly, what is the standard of Goodness (Ṭayyib) and Vile (Khabīth)? Does being ḥarām mean that something must be unclean (najas)? This article is an effort to search for answers to such questions.
